Al Green moves to impeach Trump | ABNN NewsbreakJamie Jackson, Correspondent
WASHINGTON (ABNN) - Congressman Al Green says he will file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, telling The American Black News Network in an exclusive interview that Congress has a constitutional duty to act.
Green said he is moving forward with the articles and plans to present them on the House floor Monday afternoon.
The Texas Democrat said the case against Trump goes beyond questions about the president's ballroom project. Green said the larger issue is how Trump has used immigration enforcement and whether Congress is willing to use the power the Constitution gives it.
"We have in the Constitution the article that allows us to impeach a president such as Trump," Green told The American Black News Network.
Green said Congress should move forward with impeachment.
"Congress should move forward with impeachment," Green said. "And we’ve got reasons beyond the ballroom. That's inconsequential when we look at the lives that have been lost and the way he has allowed ICE and CBP to become paramilitary forces, acting as judge, jury, prosecutor, and executioner with impunity."
"I'm bringing articles of his impeachment against the president next week," Green said.
"I'm going to file articles next week so that we can let the world have the opportunity to see what Congress can do,” he added.
Green acknowledged he does not know how Congress will respond.
"What will Congress do? I have no idea," Green said. "But I can tell you what I would do. I believe that I have a duty to stand."
He said there are times when lawmakers have to act even if others do not join them.
"There are times when others may not stand with you," Green said. "But on some issues, it's better to stand alone than not stand at all."
The move sets up another direct confrontation between Green and Trump, and it puts the impeachment question back before Congress at a time when Green says the issue is bigger than politics.
